Mogadishu (HOL) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday declared the establishment of Somalia’s national meteorological agency complete, calling it a milestone in rebuilding key state institutions. The agency now awaits approval by the federal parliament.
Speaking during the Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Mohamud said the Somalia Meteorological Agency was created to align with international standards, particularly those of the World Meteorological Organization, ensuring the country can integrate into global climate monitoring systems.
He said the institution will provide Somalia with accurate climate data to support planning, early warning systems, and emergency response to recurring droughts, floods, and cyclones.
“This agency is part of our broader effort to rebuild institutions essential to Somalia’s progress and stability,” Mohamud said.
Officials expect the agency to become a cornerstone of climate preparedness, issuing storm and rainfall alerts, supporting farmers and fishermen, and boosting Somalia’s participation in international environmental programs.
Somalia is one of the countries most exposed to climate shocks, with communities facing worsening droughts and floods each year. Mohamud said the new agency will help the nation strengthen resilience and better mitigate the effects of climate change.
If ratified by parliament, the Somalia Meteorological Agency would provide a strategic tool for national planning, disaster preparedness, and raising public awareness of environmental risks.
