Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s intelligence agency, with
support from international partners, has killed a senior al-Shabaab commander
in a planned operation in the Hiiraan region, the government said Wednesday.
The operation in the Shaw area targeted Hussein Abdullahi
Dalab, known within the extremist group as Aamir, who officials said led
al-Shabaab’s militia in the region.
According to a government statement, Aamir was responsible
for planning and carrying out attacks in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle over many
years.
Authorities described his killing as a major blow to the group’s supply
and coordination activities in central and southern Somalia.
NISA has stepped up operations in recent weeks, targeting
al-Shabaab commanders as part of the federal government’s wider campaign to
weaken the al-Qaeda-linked group and reclaim territory under its control.
