Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia on Tuesday condemned an Israeli
airstrike in Doha that targeted Hamas leaders, calling it a “grave violation of
international law” and a threat to regional and global peace.
“Somalia strongly condemns the terrorist military actions
carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities against residential compounds
in Doha, which violate the national sovereignty of the sisterly State of Qatar
and deliberately target innocent civilians in contravention of all
international conventions,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a
statement.
Mogadishu urged the UN Security Council to “assume its
responsibilities” and take immediate measures to stop Israel’s repeated
attacks, while reaffirming its solidarity with Qatar and its people “in the
face of these aggressions.”
The Israeli strike, which reportedly involved 15 fighter
jets firing 10 munitions at a single target, sparked international
condemnation. Witnesses in Doha said they heard as many as eight separate
explosions.
Hamas said five of its members were killed but claimed its
top leadership survived the attack.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and a number of world
leaders denounced the strike as a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty and
territorial integrity of Qatar.”
