Mogadishu (HOL) — A young Somali businessman was killed
Sunday night in Durban, South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, in what
community leaders described as another targeted attack against Somali traders.
The victim, identified as Abdi Hussein Fiidoow, widely known
as Abdi Jaqaf, was gunned down shortly after leaving evening prayers at a
mosque in a predominantly Somali neighborhood of Durban, according to Somali
traders in South Africa.
Witnesses said the assailants opened fire and fled the scene
before police arrived. South African security forces launched an investigation,
but community members expressed frustration, saying past inquiries into similar
killings have produced little progress.
Somali traders in South Africa have long complained of being
frequent targets of armed robberies, shootings, and xenophobic attacks.
The
South African government has repeatedly pledged to address violence against
foreign nationals, but Somali community leaders say the killings continue with
impunity.
