Mogadishu (HOL) — Unknown gunmen shot and killed a prominent
elder, Aden Mohamud Buurdhubo, in the Gedo region’s Beled Hawo district on
Monday night, residents said.
The attackers fled immediately after the shooting, and the
motive for the killing remains unclear. Somali security forces have launched an
investigation.
Balad Hawo District Commissioner Shire Abdul Keynan
expressed condolences to the family and community, describing Buurdhubo as a
key figure in local peacebuilding efforts.
“He was an important member of the District Council and a
respected elder. I extend my condolences to his family, relatives and the
entire community,” Keynan said.
The killing comes amid growing political tensions between
Somalia’s federal government and the Jubbaland administration, alongside a
surge in insecurity involving armed groups in the Gedo region.
