Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, has approved two appointments during its latest meeting.
Ahmed Hussein Elmi has been named Chairperson of the Somali Refugee and Displacement Agency, replacing Safiya Hassan Mohamed. The decision, based on a proposal from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, comes as the agency navigates complex challenges of displacement and repatriation. Elmi’s immediate priorities include building on Safiya’s legacy, which was highlighted by the December 24 repatriation of 109 Somali citizens from Yemen after years of displacement.
The cabinet also endorsed the Ministry of Finance’s nomination of Hanifa Mohamed Ibrahim to the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Somalia. Ibrahim was a former federal parliamentarian and Minister of Women’s Affairs during the Farmaajo administration. She expressed her gratitude for the appointment, emphasizing her commitment to enhancing financial governance in Somalia.
In addition to these appointments, the cabinet reviewed reports on ministry performance evaluations and strategies for mobilizing public support ahead of Somalia’s planned one-person, one-vote elections.
