Garowe (HOL) – Puntland security forces intercepted and destroyed nine explosive-laden drones during ongoing anti-ISIS operations in the Al-Miskat mountains on Monday.
The Puntland Counterterrorism Operation reported that regional forces have been carrying out intense airstrikes targeting a major ISIS command post hidden within the rugged mountain terrain.
“The forces have shot down nine drones that the terrorists attempted to use. The airstrikes are now targeting a large hideout where the militants are sheltering,” the statement read.
In 2022, the United Nations’ top counterterrorism official informed the Security Council that ISIS has significantly expanded its deployment of armed drones, posing a serious risk to international peace and security.
The use of armed drones by ISIS in Puntland underscores the group’s efforts to bolster its capabilities in the region. Puntland’s security forces have intensified their operations in the Bari region’s Al-Miskat mountains, aiming to eradicate ISIS militants entrenched in the area.
