Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali police on Saturday seized 48 sacks
of narcotics at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, authorities said,
as investigations continue to identify the individuals and networks behind the
smuggling attempt.

In a statement, the Office of the Attorney General said the
haul included 48 bags containing 52 packages each, totaling 2,496 packages,
along with six cartons of paper wrapped in the drugs.

“These drugs are a major threat to the security and wellbeing
of the Somali community and were seized before leaving the country,” the
statement said. The Attorney General’s Office added that investigations are
underway to identify those involved and vowed to bring them before the
competent court.

The statement warned that anyone engaged in drug trafficking
that endangers public health and security will face strict legal consequences.

The latest seizure comes a month after security agencies
confiscated 189 packages of illegal drugs and pills at the same airport. No
suspects have been prosecuted in that case.
