Mogadishu (HOL) – Commander of the Somali National Army’s
Ground Forces, Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, visited the recently
liberated town of Bariire in Lower Shabelle on Saturday following a decisive
victory over al-Shabaab.
During the visit, Brig. Gen. Sahal inspected battle sites,
reviewed weapons and ammunition seized from the militants, and toured
facilities holding captured fighters. He met with operational commanders,
praising the joint efforts of the SNA and African Union Stabilization Mission
in Somalia (AUSSOM) forces.
He urged troops to remain vigilant and complete clearance
operations to block any al-Shabaab attempts to re-enter the town.
The Somali Defense Ministry said Friday that more than 100
militants were killed and several captured during a week-long operation in
Lower Shabelle conducted jointly by the SNA and Uganda People’s Defence Forces
under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Bariire, a strategic agricultural hub located 73 kilometers
(45 miles) southwest of Mogadishu, was seized along with a cache of weapons and
supplies.
