Kismayo (HOL) — Jubbaland’s presidential election is set to take place on Monday in Kismayo, the interim capital of the Lower Jubba region, despite the federal government rejecting the legitimacy of the electoral process.

Four candidates are vying for the presidency: incumbent Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, Faysal Mohamed Mataan, Abubakar Abdi Hassan, and Dr. Abdi Hassan Hajiin.

Political analysts suggest that Ahmed Madobe is likely to secure another five-year term.

The Somali Prime Minister, Hamse Abdi Barre, recently declared Madobe ineligible for re-election, citing constitutional term limits. Barre labelled the election process illegitimate, accusing Madobe of undermining national unity in pursuit of personal interests.

The federal government has advocated for unified and universal suffrage across Somalia, a proposal Madobe has rejected. The opposition in Jubbaland has escalated its challenge by electing a rival parliamentary speaker and president, further intensifying the political standoff.
