An “elevated” though unspecified number of people were wounded in clashes yesterday in the port city of Kismayo, in south Somalia, nearly 500km from Mogadishu.
As reported by local sources, the local authorities have imposed a night curfew (9:00p.m. to dawn) throughout the city.
The identity remains unclear of the protagonists of the fighting, which according to some has been underway for days.
According to some sources, the fighting broke out between men of the Juba Valley coalition (the authority that has controlled the area for some time, headed by the current Defence Minister of the interim government, Bare Hirale) and some unspecified “mutinous militants”, according to others instead supporters of the Islamic Courts.
The situation appears calm in the city for the moment, though the continuing patrols on the streets of Kismayo raise fears of a resumption of the fighting.
Unconfirmed rumors have been in circulation for time on the possibility of an attack by the Islamic Courts in Kismayo.
