To disinfect product water before the addition of syrups and flavouring, Hanovia has supplied a UV disinfection system to the United Bottling Company’s new plant in Mogadishu, Somalia. The low pressure UV system treats a flow of 17m3/hour of reverse osmosis permeate.

“The robustness and reliability of the Hanovia equipment was an important factor in our choice of UV system,” said Mr Abdirisak Isse, founder and partner of the Company.

The plant bottles Coca Cola, Fanta and Sprite under licence for distribution to the Somali market. A 100% Somali-owned operation, it was built against difficult odds in the strife-torn city which has no police and no insurance – only gun law. The original factory was destroyed in the war that took place in the 1990s.

“We employ over 150 people at the factory, with another 70 finding jobs as distributors,” added Mr Isse. “We currently produce 36, 000 bottles of soft drinks per hour, with the Hanovia UV system playing a vital role in ensuring hygiene and quality standards remain high.” He went on to explain that the Company relies on the self-interest of local Somalis to protect the plant by drawing in partners from as wide a range of communities as possible.

By permanently killing bacteria, viruses and moulds, UV ensures process water is free from spoilage or potentially pathogenic microorganisms. It is a completely clean technology which leaves no taint and has no effect on the taste, colour or odour of the product. It can be used as the main disinfection system, as a back-up to alternative methods, or in specific clean-room environments where high standards of sterility must be maintained.

Hanovia has over 80 years’ experience in the manufacture, application and development of UV technology for non-chemical disinfection and microbiological control. For more information please visit the company’s website at
