SEOUL (Yonhap) _ South Korea said Thursday that it was nearing a compromise on the release of several South Korean fishermen from their Somali kidnappers.

“We have reached about 90 percent of an agreement on the conditions for their release,” a government official said on the condition of anonymity.

Seoul has been struggling to win the release of the eight South Korean sailors who were kidnapped in early April off the coast of Somalia.

They were aboard a tuna ship along with 17 other crew members from other Asian nations. The kidnappers have reportedly asked for a huge ransom.

“We have hired a British broker who has experience in dealing with a similar case in Somalia,” the official said.
