‘The Journey’ – A celebration of the Somali Community in
BBC Radio Leicester, as part of the Roots Project – a BBC English Regions and Arts Council England partnership – is celebrating ten years of the Somali Community in
The series of events, entitled ‘The Journey’, looks at the contribution made by Leicester’s newest and fastest-growing community, many of whom have travelled from far and wide to settle in the region, through photographs and storytelling on BBC Radio Leicester and BBC East Midlands Today.
The project looks to celebrate the diversity of the Somali people who have made Leicester their home and focus on the history of the community and what the future holds.
On Wednesday 27th September, between 9am and 12noon, BBC Radio Leicester are broadcasting live from St Matthew’s Community Solutions Centre, experiencing all aspects of Somali life and what it means to be a Somali living in Leicester.
On Thursday 28th September, between10am – 10.30am, a live radio debate is taking place to encourage people to learn more about the Somali community. Titled ‘You should know who I am’, If not why not? Tell me who you think I am.
Then on Sunday 1st October, between 6pm and 10pm, BBC Radio
There are also various films on the Somali community in Leicester being shown on BBC East Midlands Today throughout the week and further information and stories are available online at bbc.co.uk/Leicester along with exhibitions and events being held at the BBC Radio Leicester Open Centre.
The Roots Project is a BBC English Regions and Arts Council England partnership designed to build new audiences by raising the profile of African, Asian, Caribbean and Chinese arts in mainstream broadcasting.
