It is very important for every Somali person to believe helping their community makes individual improvements achievable. Therefore, as a Somali person, it is very important to evaluate your contribution at helping Somali people, because taking a self assessment shows how much your volunteer effort contribute to your people. Understanding and knowing about your volunteer effort within your community gives you honest feedback about your involvement with your people.

Before discussing anything, let me list something that would be good to know as a Somali person: your beliefs, your core values and your thoughts that make Somali life worth living. When you understand those things, it will be easier to follow your plan and make a difference for yourself first, and then for your Somali community, whoever they are.

Why is belief important? First and foremost, knowing your belief is one thing that assures success for every human being. It doesn’t matter if that belief is based on ideology, faith, or something else. Both ideology and faith are good things for progress, but belief is the most important to have. Why? Because ideology may change easily, but deep faith is very tough to change.

Faith is a good thing for human beings, so always be proud of what you believe. For example, if you believe in Islam and that makes you feel happy, it is very tough to change, in contrast with changing ideology easily. However, Islam teaches you many good things, such as good character, thinking big, being humble, and showing what is right or wrong.

Why is it important, knowing your core values, as a Somali person? It is very necessary to understand your core values should be helping Somali people. Why? Helping Somali people will build up the unity of the Somali nation. Developing national unity will make individual progress possible. Remember, if your people have unity, then you have power as a community.

Therefore, make one of your core values to help Somali people, because your help is the best way to keep your values, and become a powerful person. It is clear if your community has power; you get respect from the other people because of your community’s unity and voice. However, you core value is to help Somali people and “make one” their voice–whatever place in the world they live.

What kind of thinking would make Somali life worth living? The most important thing that makes Somali life worth living is to help others because your people are a part of you. There is a difference between a person with strong community and a person who doesn’t have community. For example, if you make your community is very strong, you get back many good things from it such as voice, power, support and help.

At the same time, helping your community gives you training, such as learning leadership skills, and studying your peoples’ character, which gives you very good experiences to deal with other communities. It is obvious; if everybody helped his or her community, life would become worth living, because when society helps themselves, violence and corruption are limited.
