The Parliamentary campaign in Sweden has been a central ground where the Prime Minster of Sweden Goran Persson  and Yaasiin Maaxi have been actively been campaigning on the same platform in Sormland region in Sweden. The upcoming campaign for the Parliamentary election due on 17 Sep 2006 has gone into its final phase whereby the ruling party is once again asking the electorate to vote for them so as to continue the economic prosperity achieved under the Social Democrats.

Yasin Mahi Malin is standing as a parliamentary candidate for the first time in his political career in Sweden. He has been very fortunate to be on the same candidate list with the current Prime Minister of Sweden Hon Goran Persson and both are campaigning from the same region in Sweden.

As we know Yasin Mahi has been active in the Swedish politics and one of the front runners, is now seen as deserving to represent his constituency in Parliament.

While speaking to the media in his home town of Eskilstuna in Sormland region, Mr Mahi spoke of his willingless to work hard for the rights of the migrant communities many of whom are refugees.

He also mentioned that there was a double standard in granting Swedish citizenship to the Somali community whereby it takes 8 years for a person with Somali citizenship to become a Swedish citizen whereas other migrant groups are given citizenship within 3-5 years. He further said this double standard extends to family re-union or applying a visitor’s visa for the Somali-Swedes to their parents and close relatives whereas visitor’s visa was easily available to other Swedish migrants for anyone they wished to invite. This is not justice to the Somali-Swedes who have made Sweden their home and they expect this double-standard to be lifted against a section of the Swedish who happened to have Somali origin and he said every citizen should enjoy the same rights. Mr Mahi has welcomed the confidence that the Social Democrats have shown in his ability to represent the party and his constituency in Parliament.

Mr Mahi said that he will campaign very hard to redress the injustices and double-standards that the Somali community faces in their day to day lives. He will in particular address these issues within the Social Democratic Party. Among other issues that he will work against will be the rampant mass unemployment among the Somali communities, discrimination at work, in their social lives and foreign policy.

The importance of unity in the face of these difficulties has beed reiteriated by Mr Mahi who further said that we need to make decisions collectively for our future in Sweden. The concept of tribalism has been central to the division amongst the Somali community and  Mr Mahi once again reminded his fellow Somali –Swedes that they need to unite in order that they may prosper in Sweden and that they need to stand up and be counted.

While leaf-letting on his political agenda, he presented his constituency his ambition to imporove his constituency in the following ways:

  • To improve the standard of education

  • To provide better access to services and facilities to the elderly

  • To improve integration and social inclusion for all

  • To address the issues of the refugees and migrants

  • To improve and increase Sweden’s participation in cooperation with such countries as Somalia.

Vote Social Democrats! Vote for Mr Yasin Mahi Maalin.
