Brussels, 11 May 2006 – Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and Commissioner Louis MICHEL appealed for a halt to the armed clashes in Mogadishu, whose principal victims are the civilian population.

The High Representative and the Commissioner reaffirm their full support for the efforts of Somalia’s transitional federal institutions to restore peace and stability in Somalia. They urgently appeal to those in Mogadishu who have chosen to take up arms to renounce violence and to join the Somali peace process without any pre-conditions.

After more than a decade of fratricidal wars, the Somali population now seeks to return to normality.
