The Isle of Man government has pledged £65,000 for humanitarian aid for the victims of the crisis in East Africa.

A severe drought is currently affecting about eight million people in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The Overseas Aid Committee of the Council of Ministers on the island has divided the money between Concern Worldwide and UNICEF.

The money will be used for food rations to children, mobile nutrition clinics and a measles immunisation campaign.

The chairman of the overseas aid committee, George Waft, said that it was happy to respond to requests for aid.

He said: “It is the committee’s sincere hope that the recent rains in the region will continue so that the area may soon recover from this severe crisis.”
