Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met
Wednesday with the new commander of U.S. Africa Command, Gen. Dagvin R.M.
Anderson, in Mogadishu to discuss strengthening security and counterterrorism
cooperation. U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard H. Riley also attended the
talks.

The discussions focused on enhancing Somalia–U.S.
collaboration in security, counterterrorism and stabilization efforts,
according to officials.

Mohamud praised AFRICOM’s support for Somalia’s ongoing
security sector reforms and reaffirmed his government’s determination to
advance peace with the help of international partners.

Anderson reiterated Washington’s commitment to working
closely with Somalia in the fight against al-Shabaab and in promoting long-term
stability in the Horn of Africa.

The visit illustrated the enduring partnership between the
two countries as Somalia intensifies operations against al-Shabaab, the
al-Qaeda-linked group that continues to wage a deadly insurgency in central and
southern Somalia.

Anderson’s visit to Mogadishu is part of a regional tour of African countries hosting U.S. forces.
