Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali National Army forces on Saturday
foiled an attempted roadside bombing in Janaale district of Lower Shabelle,
officials said.
The 14th October Battalion intercepted the landmine, which
militants had planted on a road frequented by residents, according to Brig.
Gen. Abdirahin Mohamed Munye, the battalion’s commander.
“Intelligence reports led our forces to the device, which
was safely neutralized,” Munye said.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts to prevent attacks
on civilians and stabilize the region, where heavy military operations against
al-Shabab militants have been underway for weeks.
The group has suffered significant losses in recent clashes,
according to the military.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked group, has waged an insurgency
in Somalia for more than 15 years.
