Mogadishu (HOL) – Security forces in Mogadishu clashed on Thursday
with armed militia protesting the federal government’s plan to seize a plot of
land long inhabited by civilians since the 1991 collapse of Somalia’s central
government.

The fighting broke out at Horseed Stadium, near Tarabuunka
junction, formerly the headquarters of the Somali Military Football Team.
Residents have begun fleeing the area as gunfire continues in Hodan district.

Hospitals in the capital have received wounded civilians,
with social media images showing young people among the casualties and reports
that some homes were hit by stray bullets.

The government has not released details on casualties or
commented on the ongoing standoff.

The dispute stems from a government order issued several
months ago for residents to vacate Horseed Stadium to make way for a
redevelopment project — a move that residents have resisted, leading to the
current confrontation.
