Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali military forces have killed a
senior Al-Shabaab leader during an operation in the southwestern city of
Hudur, the army announced on Sunday.

According to the statement, the slain militant had served in
multiple roles within the Al-Qaeda–linked group, most recently as its financial
officer. He was also accused of forcibly recruiting children into the group’s
ranks.

The operation also dismantled a network of Al-Shabaab
operatives active in the region, the statement added.

Somali forces, engaged in a years-long campaign against the
group, have recently reclaimed several key areas once under militant control.
Al-Shabaab has carried out deadly attacks over the past decade, killing
hundreds of civilians and security personnel.

The Somali Defense Ministry said Friday that more than 100
militants were killed and several captured during a week-long operation in
Lower Shabelle conducted jointly by the SNA and Uganda People’s Defence Forces
under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
