Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has announced that his administration will launch a tax collection campaign in the coming weeks, emphasizing the need for citizens and businesses to fulfill their tax obligations.

Speaking in Mogadishu on Monday, Mohamud urged the public to cooperate with the government, warning that authorities will take action against tax evaders.

“If you hear that the government has arrested people for not paying taxes, know that they are in the wrong, not the government. Most people pay their taxes and do not face any issues. Those who are being arrested are those who refuse to comply. Tell them, ‘Pay your taxes,’” he said.

The president also addressed business owners, stressing that the revenue collected is essential for maintaining security and protecting commercial establishments. “The safety of your businesses is directly linked to the taxes collected from the people. Everyone must fulfill their obligations,” he added.

Mohamud’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between Somali business owners and the Ministry of Finance over tax policies, which have led to the temporary closure of Bakaara Market—Africa’s largest marketplace—along with sections of Hamarweyne and Suuq Bacaad markets.

Compounding these challenges, the militant group Al-Shabaab has escalated its extortion of businesses, further increasing economic uncertainty across the country.
