Baidoa (HOL) — Somali forces have launched an offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in the Bakool region, targeting a strategic road that has long been under insurgent control. The operation is part of a campaign to reclaim key territories across the South West State of Somalia.
The 9th Battalion of the 60th Division led the operation, focusing on the road connecting Hudur and Qurajome. The route had been heavily fortified by Al-Shabaab, who used it to control the area and impose taxes on locals.
Lieutenant Colonel Elmi Adan Isaaq, the commander of the 9th Battalion, reported that government forces successfully dismantled multiple Al-Shabaab checkpoints and overran several of their positions along the route. “By clearing this road, we’ve disrupted Al-Shabaab’s operations and restored an important lifeline for locals,” Isaaq stated.
While the exact number of casualties remains unknown, local sources indicate that the increased military presence has brought a sense of security to residents.
